Avatars are an extension of our own ego; an image of what we might want to look like to others.  If someone makes a derrogatory remark, it's more likely a sign of jealousy than truth.

Not that I agree with this opinion, but some people think that if you put your real face on your avatar that you're looking for compliments (I don't know if that's really you or not, but it could be).  

I personally think it looks fine. Check out "Melissa" here on Etiquette - she doesn't even have a shirt on - just a sports bra - THAT'S Pathetic (capital P).
