Someone know about halfway houses??

my friend is getting out of prision soon and he will be going to a halfway house. What is a halfway house? H e thinks he gets to g home on the weekend but is not sure is this trues and if so then how long before you can go home? Im sure you have to earn that privlage. How long do people have to stay in a halfway house?
