You can sort hotels by specific area within the city, price and other criteria. There are also reviews by people who have stayed in the hotels. Many of the cheaper options will be in the Temini area around the train station. The Accademia is about a block from the Trevi Fountain. The Hotel Romano is across from the forum - 2 star but nice and very convienent. Hotel Artorius is another good choice near the colosseum.

You might be interested into looking into convents as a relatively cheap lodging alternative. The site below has information about convents in Rome and other places in Italywhere they accept travellers. All of these include breakfast and some offer other meals cheaply. My brother and his wife stayed at one in Rome and loved it.
