Someone please define the "D-x" designation for college football!?

I'm not familiar with what those defining factors mean, i.e., D1, D3... I keep seeing this terminology and with a son who wants to play college ball, I should know a bit more about it.

Anyone who could explain it to me without a War and Peace dissertation will earn the 10 pts!

Thanks

  1. The college has to have a certain number of students and participate in a certain number of sports.  Example:  To be a Division-1 school in football you have to have between 50k and 100k students and participate in 10 sports.  To be Division-2 a school has to have between 30k and 50k students and participate in 5 sports. That's just an example and the rules for division 1 basketball are different.

Try Wikipedia(list of Division 1 schools, division 2 schools, etc.) or try the specific school's website.   It will be a lot easier to make the team and get playing time at a smaller division 3 school than it will be at a bigger division 1 school.
