Someone please tell me how to wash a sport jersey?

I have a number of football jerseys. When I wash them in a washing machine for the first few times, they come out just fine. But after washing them multiples times, the jersey number and player name on the back start to become stiff and they crack. Is there a correct way of washing jerseys that can prevent this?

The only thing I can suggest is to hand wash them, and maybe use a fabric softener? And be sure to try and heat steam the numbers when possible, this will help to keep them adhesed, and also keep them moist, and prevent from cracking. good luck.
