Someone said my drawings are kitsch. Is this a bad thing?

Should I continue to draw these sort of images or just not bother any more? I know I keep drawing the same kind of pictures, and yes I suppose they do lack creativity because i'm basically just copying photos I find on the net, but it's just a hobby and I enjoy doing it.

  1. don't stop drawing just because of negative feedback. if anything use this feedback as a motivation to draw more and prove them wrong eh?

Personally i love the way you draw, i love the way you shade with the blocks, its original and even though you copy off photos off the net you are able to manipulate the drawings into your own style, and they're not carbon copies.

don't let bad comments let you down, your drawings are about you and not what others think. and by the looks of your drawing i reckon you gt more praise then negativism.

  2. You have some good drawing skills, but you need to advance to the next level: drawing from life.  After you have started building up a portfolio of life drawings, you will find people respect your efforts a lot more.

Yes, the comment about your work being kitsch is unflattering, unless you are trying to cultivate irony in some kind of contemporary conceptual theme, which I am guessing is not what you are aiming towards.

  3. Of course they're kitsch of a sort, but they're also very competent. The faceted shading you use creates quite a slick impression and is well within the (vast) spectrum of perfectly valid, well-produced art.

And if you enjoy doing it, then by golly that's your right!

If you're still talking to the person who said your work is kitsch, you could just let drop that Jeff Koons is a multimillionaire. If they don't know who he is, they don't know kitsch!
