  1. 1) Secure the router itself by changing the administrative password.  If you can't do this following the manual's instructions, press the reset button on the back of the router.  Then change the password of the router.

    2) Enable WPA or WPA2.  Do not waste your time with WEP.  WEP can be circumvented in 5 minutes or less.

    3) Enable MAC Address filtering on the router.  Make sure you enter the MAC addresses of machines you want to connect in the router's MAC table.

    4) Disable the SSID broadcast on your router.  This helps prevent the more casual hacker from finding your router.

    5) Limit the number of IP address in the DHCP settings of your router to the actual number of IP addresses you need.   If you have one desktop, one laptop, a Wii and an entertainment system that uses wireless.  You would only need 4 IP addresses.  So 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.5  would be prudent.

    6) Disable REMOTE administration of your router.  Remote administration allows anyone that can get on the Internet access to your router.

The above mentioned steps won't prevent any possibility of intrusion.  They merely make you a much less desirable target than the people that haven't taken these precautions.

  2. The specifics you are looking for are in your Router manual.  If you don't have one got to your router Manufacturer's homepage and download a copy.

    To stop the Bandwidth Thief:

Change your router password (never keep the default password that came with the router)

Turn wireless Off (if you don't use it or aren't using it)

    Hide your SSID

    Add encryption WEP or WPA

Set MAC Addressing On (add your wireless adapter(s) MAC Addresses to the MAC Table, so only those addresses are given access)

    Good Luck

  3. unplug it and let them understand that it isnt coming back on. they eventually stop and your can replug it in

  4. Sign into your routers config via IP and browser (usually).

Change the password for your encryption from there. It is also advised you change your router configuration login so people cannot change your settings.

Either change your encryption password or go to your neighbours with a bat!

    Good luck! :)
