Question:

Someone stole my credit card number, what should I do?

I discovered this about 2 days ago when I logged onto my internet bank and saw that US$600 was missing. I immediately called my bank and they cancelled my credit card, and I had to file a claim. Today I logged on again and saw that they'd somehow taken another $1000. What should I do? I've already changed all my passwords and pin numbers, got rid of my card, deleted my online accounts (such as Paypal, even though it's supposed to be safe I'm just paranoid now), and scanned my computer for Trojans (which I actually found, and deleted).

Have I missed anything? Do you think there's any point in filing a police report?

  1. You should call the bank and let them know about the $1,000 more being taken from your card and to confirm it's canceled. They should have fraud protection, so you won't have to pay for anything the crooks bought or took with the card. You will need to sign a claim form and have it Notarized. They'll cancel the card and give you a new card with new numbers. Scan your computer with Spybot. It's free and works great in removing keyloggers, viruses and harmful programs from computers.

  2. Hello there,

Credit card debt is a massive problem millions of people are facing at the moment and can really ruin your life. Repossessions are going through the roof because people cannot afford to live with the massive rises in the cost of living.

You really need to minimise your credit card debt and ideally get rid of it.

Firstly, consolidate your cards into one with a zero interest deal, if you can. Then get rid of all the others and start paying the one that is left off. It does mean you are going to have to cut back and live within your means, but that is no bad thing.

Paying off your credit card debt can take some time and will require discipline on your part but it can be done.  I've found some good information that has helped me at http://www.howtopayoffyourcreditcards.co...

    Hope that's useful for you!

  3. yes and also call the card company and restate that the card is stolen also since you found a trojan place a fraud alert on your credit file

  4. Yes, what's happening is credit card fraud.  Contact your bank again and let them know what is still happening and then contact the company's that the charges are for and have them reverse the charges.  IE if the card was used to purchase something from jcpenny, call jcpenny and explain to them the problem.  They will ask a few questions, determine that your card was stolen, and then they'll credit the money back.

  5. File a police report, definitely.  It will help with dealing with the fraud department.

  6. Cancel all credit cards. File a police report. Credit card company will not do anything without police report. Don't use online banking anymore. Takes 24hr for something to post on credit card. purchase must have been made day before. Take copy of police report and send to all companies that accepted your credit card especially phone payments.

Watch out for scammers: winning contest where you win but have to pay 200 right then and there, ANY phone payments(any yack at a call center working for American express or any company at that can take that number use it or sell it), anyone who asks for the 3 numbers on the back CVV2 Code, address and your birth date (they can call and pretend to be you).
