  1. Don't think so

  2. I'VE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A DANGER.  I think your biggest danger right now is HURRICANE DEAN!!!

  3. no its not!

  4. I just got back from the Riviera Maya on Monday.  I felt very safe the whole time, on and off the resort.  Everyone was friendly and helpful, including collectivo, taxi and bus drivers.  (I'm from the US).  Just use the normal travel precautions, don't get wasted and wander off w/ any strange men, and use common sense.  You'll be fine.

  5. I live close to the Mexico border & have been to other places in Mexico such as Cancun, Cabo, Guadalajara, Guanajuato..etc. As long as you take "common sense" precautions you should be fine.

Keep small bills, keep money out of sight & in different pockets so it doesnt look like you have a lot. Keep your hands on your purse or bags, keep cameras hidden or hold on to them. & Dont be nervous. Sure there will be crime, but every city in the world has crime & no matter where you go if you are nervous or up tight you really won't enjoy the whole experience of being in a new place!

Catch a cab or bus from your hotel & airport, stay in the tourist part of town, take group excursions & tours, stay in well lit areas at night. Like I said....its just common sense.

It would be a sad thing if you decided not to explore the world in fear of things that happen all over the world! You'd never get to see a thing!

Good Luck & have fun....if you decide to go!

  6. Oh pleeezzze.  What the h**l.    Ridiculous really.    If you are really worried, then I would just stay home.

  7. There have been a couple of high profile cases recently - there was the murder of a Toronto couple last year, and a few months ago, a guy died from injuries that supposedly resulted from a fall off a balcony, but appeared to the family to have been beaten. There are always exagerations when these things happen - the best info you can get is by going to the Canadian government website, and check the traveller alerts link.

Mexico, like many countries, has areas where violent crimes and kidnappings are likely to occur. Find out where these areas are and avoid them, and take proper precautions. For the most part, Mexico is a beautiful country with very nice people.

  8. Not only Candian, but  to everybody, for this reason take a cab from a "sitio" (central of a taxi company).

About the resort staff, it is the first time I heard about it.  But in general the rules in México are:

*Don´t show a lot of money.

*don´t use a lot of jewelry

*Ask first which times/neighbourhoods are save.

*Go to prestigious resorts (for example Marriot look for employees in the universities, it means, people with good social level).

I am Mexican, but my husband is German, and we never had any kind of problems, include Mexico city.

  9. I too saw the W5 thing on ctv, ive also done my research. IF YOU REALLY WORRIED dont go, chances are you'll be fine. if you do go remember your in another country, show resepect the their country and the people in it and they shall respect you.

  10. That's Canadian media blowing everything out of proportion.

Statistically the incidence of violence is very low. I saw the numbers that W5 and others were basing their reports on. It was something like 3 or 4 violent incidents per 100, 000 Canadian visitors to Mexico. That's nothing. Can you imagine how many violent incidents you would have if you had 100, 000 tourist (most drinking a bit too much) in a large Canadian city? I'm betting more than 4.

Just use common sense. Leave all your bling at home. Don't get pissed and try to walk home at 3 in the morning alone while waving 20's at passing cars and you should be fine.

  11. no way, this is just not true
