The match started after a long delay, as the conditions were not ideal for cricket at all. It had rained overnight and continued before the start of the match as well. Both teams and the spectators waited long for the final verdict over the match.

However, the drainage system at the Old Trafford was extremely good, which made some play possible at the end of the day.
After a lot of hard work from the ground staff, the umpires walked out in the middle to assess the condition of the ground and the pitch. The outfield was a little wet, but the running area for the bowlers and the square was almost dry.
The umpires gave a green signal to both teams and the play finally commenced after a long delay. The playing conditions were revised though, as quite a lot of time was lost due to the showers.
Both teams were allowed 15 overs each, which gave the fans some hope of an exciting encounter.
The pitch was a bit damp, which suggested that the bowlers might get some swing and seam movement with the new ball. The weather was also overcast, which locked the moisture beneath the surface of the wicket.

However, things didn’t turn out to be as good as the hosts would have liked, as they lost a few wickets early in the innings.

Croft didn’t find many problems in the middle, as he played aggressive cricket. He smashed 26 runs off 18 balls with the help of four boundaries, but failed to carry onto the start he got to his innings.
Unfortunately for both teams and the fans, rain stopped play once again. Lancashire were 39/3 in 7.4 overs at that stage.
