Somerset decide against taking legal action in Chris Gayle case – Cricket News Update
English county cricket club Somerset have decided to refrain from taking legal action against Chris Gayle, after he breached his T20 contract with them in favour of playing for the West Indies.
The Jamaican all-rounder had agreed to play the Friends Provident T20 for Somerset, but pulled out of the deal earlier this month, opting to give preference to playing for the West Indies.
Following a consultation with legal experts, however, the club has decided not to pursue the matter further, and issued a statement wishing Gayle the best of luck with his national commitments.
“Having taken legal advice and reflected on the situation, we have concluded it is not in the best interests of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221, or cricket more generally to pursue this matter any further,” read an official statement by Somerset
chief executive Guy Lavender on the club website. “We wish Chris well and hope to see him back playing for West Indies this summer.”
Gayle has not played for his national team since the 2011 World Cup, and his journey back into the squad has been anything but smooth.
The 32-yar-old fell out of favour with the West Indies Cricket Board after some critical comments he made regarding the board and head coach http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ottis-Delroy-Gibson-c80358 to a Jamaican sport station on the radio. Criticizing the board for having failed to provide sufficient
treatment for an injury he had sustained, and slamming the head coach for being a “user” who had mentally tormented players during the Windies’ World Cup campaign, most particularly http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RR-Sarwan-c2371, Gayle’s comments led to a grudge between him and the board.
The left-hander busied himself with commitments to other tournaments, such as the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 Premier League, during which he played for the Barisal Burners, and most recently the Indian Premier League, in which he is currently one of the most hard-hitting
batsmen in the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batting line-up for the ongoing 5th edition of the tournament.
Gayle was close to a reconciliation with the board when both parties agreed that he was viable for selection in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755, and the board agreed to consider him for the limited-overs leg of the tour. However, the dates
clashed with Gayle’s commitments with Somerset, and he ultimately agreed to pull out of the latter in favour of national duty.
