Somerset defeat http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851 by 38 runs: Friends Life Twenty20 - Part 1
Somerset defeated Surrey comfortably by 38 runs in a match of the Friends Life Twenty20, at the Kennington Oval, London in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Thursday, June 30, 2011.
The visitors batted first and scored 169 runs, courtesy a brilliant half-century from seasoned campaigner, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Hildreth-c1647, who top scored the match with 58 runs. There was no other batsman in both sides to take his score past 50.
Chasing 170 run for victory, the Surrey team was unable to cope with the pressure and fell way short of the target in the end. The team was restricted to 131/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marcus-Trescothick-c1898, who has been leading Somerset from the front with his thunderous batting, won the toss and decided to bat first. The pitch was very dry and indicated some assistance for the spinners, especially in the second half of the game.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Trego-c2181 opened the innings alongside his skipper and the pair gave a solid start to their side. They collected 58 runs for the first wicket partnership in just the first five overs.
However, Trescothick was unable to make most of the start to his innings and was sent back to the pavilion after adding 35 runs to the total. He didn’t waste much time though, as his runs came from 17 balls with the help of six fours and one massive six.
The fall of wicket brought Hildreth at the crease, who gave good support to Trego. Both players tried to build a solid platform for the lower-order batsmen and succeeded in their cause, putting together 51 runs for the second wicket.
The team’s opener failed to capitalise on the start he got to his innings though and was dismissed after scoring a run-a-ball 27. He would have liked to bat until the end, but lost his focus and got out.
Wicketkeeper batsman, Jos http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 team was in a very good position
to take their score closer to 200.
However, the lower-order batsmen failed miserably, which limited the team’s total to 169 in the end. Hildreth got out after scoring 58 runs from 49 balls, smashing five boundaries in his knock.
Somerset lost four wickets for just seven runs in the death overs, which didn’t allow them to score a huge total and the momentum shifted towards the Surrey team.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DP-Nannes-c1396 was the pick of the bowlers for the home side, as he took a couple of wickets in the match and caused a few problems for the batsmen.
