Somerset suffer first defeat in 2010 Clydesdale Bank 40 Cup, Sussex win by DL method
Somerset faced its first defeat of the 2010 Clydesdale Bank 40 as the Duckworth Lewis method declared Sussex victors by 17 runs. Though Somerset is still leading Group A, the victory has kept Sussex’s hopes of lifting third successive Clydesdale Bank 40 title alive.
While chasing Somerset’s competitive 20-overs total of 216 at the Cricket Field Road, Horsham on Sunday, Sussex was 177 for 4 after 15 overs when rain stopped the game. Duckworth http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lewis-c72807 method was consulted and the chasers were found to be 17 runs ahead of the target as per calculation so Sussex was announced winner with a lead of 17 runs.
Somerset batsmen blazed with the bat under the overcast conditions setting an imposing total of 216 for 7 from the restated 20 overs. Half centuries from Marcus Trescothick and Peter Trego well supported by Craig Kieswetter’s bludgeoning 45 of 26 took the side towards a competitive 216, in bowler friendly conditions. Luke Wright took three wickets while Monty Panesar claimed two. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Kirtley-c1648 was the most expensive Sussex bowler conceding runs at an economy of 11.25 an over in his quota of 4 overs.
Morning rain forced the 40-overs game to be reduced to 20 overs and the damp, cloudy, conditions at the start meant Sussex had no hesitation in asking Somerset to bat first after winning the toss. Michael Yardy favoured his bowlers on a damp wicket in dull and gloomy conditions by putting the opposition into bat first. But the overcast conditions did not bother the explosive opening combination of Somerset featuring skipper, Marcus Trescothick, and the wicketkeeper batsman, Craig Kieswetter. Both the partners faced bowler friendly conditions with confidence, setting a strong foundation of more than hundred runs for the rest of the batting line-up.
Somerset was 102 in the eighth over when Chris Wright earned his side a breakthrough having the wicketkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Craig-Kieswetter-c51708, caught by, Michael Yardy. Kieswetter scored 45 runs from 26 balls. During his 35-minute stay at the crease, Kieswetter entertained the Horsham crowd with four lofty sixes and three muscular boundaries.
Kieswetter’s dismissal brought http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Monty-Panesar-c2024 leaving Somerset 165 for 2 on the board.
That became 174 for 3 when Trescothick followed Trego in the next over slashing Yardy to Wright. Trescothick scored 67 runs from just 36 balls plundering nine boundaries and three sixes. After Trescothick’s dismissal, Somerset lost its wickets at regular intervals. At the end of the allotted 20 overs, Somerset was 216 for seven.
In reply Michael Yardy’s whirlwind 66 off just 30 balls grabbed the game from the Group A leaders, Somerset, as the leaders faced their first defeat of this season’s Clydesdale Bank 40 tournament. At 86 for four, the calculations were favouring Somerset but Michael Yardy had some other ideas. With rain in the air, Yardy was well aware of the importance of run rate that the weather conditions can put them into. So the Sussex captain did not let the run rate fall below 11 an over. What made the difference was an unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership between Yardy and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sussex-c852 was 177 for 4 after 15 overs when the rain abandoned the game and owing to the remarkable run rate, Sussex was declared winner.
