Somerset wrapped up their County Championship Division One, four-day match, against Durham on the penultimate day after winning the contest by five wickets at County Ground, Taunton.
From Somerset, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GH-Dockrell-c1484, who nabbed six wickets and opener AV Suppiah, who smashed a resounding innings of 73 runs were the two stars who played a dominating role in their side’s emphatic win.
The day began with Somerset resuming their first innings from 357 runs for the loss of eight wickets in response to the first innings tally of 384 posted by Durham.
PD Trego (67) and GH Dockrell (3) came out for their side as the duo aimed to amass a lead against their rivals, but ironically they declared on posting 400 runs as Somerset always had their eyes set on winning the game.
Durham then had no idea what they were getting into as they began their second innings hoping to play the whole day, however, with a tally of 36 on the board they suffered the demise of their first wicket with opener MJ Di Venuto falling after smashing an innings of 26 runs.
Then with a tally of 69 on the board, the side lost their second wicket as MD Stoneman found his way back to the pavilion after hammering an innings of 13 runs.
Somerset then rattled Durham by dismissing star batsman, BA Stokes on nil followed by the wicket of opener WR http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 (22) with still 69 runs on the board.
With four wickets down in a limited span, Durham were caught off guard, giving Somerset an opportunity to take-up a dominating role.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/PD-Collingwood-c2173 and ID Blackwell then forged a straining resistance as they took the side to a total of 131 runs before suffering the worst sort of batting collapse as they lost four wickets on the same total.
This was the final nail in Durham’s coffin as they had their main batting line-up annihilated and were left with the lower-order to play the rest of the day which was a big ask.
Consequently, Durham faltered after posting 167 runs, giving Somerset a target of 152 runs to win the match.
Somerset without wasting any time, rallied towards the required target and won the match in 33.4 overs for the loss of five wickets.
