Somerset v Essex: Clydesdale Bank 40 – Match Recap
Somerset eased to victory against Essex by 40 runs in a match of the Clydesdale Bank 40 at the County Ground, Taunton in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Monday, August 29, 2011.
Batting first, the hosts scored 251 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 40 overs. There were some solid contributions by several players, but the highest score of the innings came from opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Trego-c2181, who collected 51 runs at the
top of the order.
In reply, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jaik-Mickleburgh-c1627 top scored the match with 56 runs, but the effort went in vain, as he lacked support from the other end.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marcus-Trescothick-c1898 opted to bat after the coin rolled in his favour at the toss. The decision was spot on, as the pitch was very good for the batsmen, which allowed them to post a decent total.
The start to the hosts’ innings was a pretty unusual one, as Trescothick retired hurt. He had scored 10 runs off the same number of deliveries at that stage of the innings.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Murali-Kartik-c78034 was promoted as the first-drop in order to score some quick runs. He contributed 29 quick runs to the total off 21 balls, smashing three fours and one six.
Kartik got out in the 11th over of the innings, but Trego continued to bat well and scored 51 runs off 55 balls before being dismissed. He was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Hildreth-c1647, who managed 41 runs in his impressive outing.
Middle-order player http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Jones-c1244 batted until the end of the innings, guiding his side to 251 with a solid innings of 45 runs. He struck three boundaries in his outing.
Essex’s bowlers Reece Topley and Tom Craddock did a decent job, taking a couple of wickets apiece.
The visitors got off to a decent start, despite losing opener Mark Pettini early. He managed just 5 runs in his short stay at the crease.
However, the innings was held together by Adam Wheater and Mickleburgh. The pair put together 78 runs for the second wicket. The former failed to make most of the start he got to his innings, getting dismissed for 33.
Mickleburgh did not miss out on a good batting pitch and scored 56 runs for his team with the help of seven boundaries.
There were a couple of solid performances from middle-order players http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Napier-c1505, who scored 30 and 41 respectively, but they failed to guide Essex to victory.
The entire team was dismissed for 211 runs in 35 overs, courtesy some good bowling by Somerset’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alfonso-Thomas-c991, who picked up two wickets.
