Somerset v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gloucestershire-c785: Clydesdale Bank 40 – Match Recap
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Wednesday, August 24, 2011.
The match did not star on scheduled time due to rain. Once the ground was ready for action, the game was reduced to 30 overs per side. Somerset collected 210 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted overs after being put into bat by the opposition.
In reply, the home team’s batsmen struggled to cope up with the bowling friendly conditions and were struggling at 70/6 in 11.3 overs when rain stopped play.
Somerset were 59 runs ahead at that stage according to the Duckworth/Lewis (D/L) method and were awarded as the winners, as no further play was possible in the day.
Gloucestershire’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alex-Gidman-c984 opted to field first after winning the toss. Any team would have done that considering the bowling friendly conditions. There was a big cloud cover over the field and the pitch also appeared to have some moisture beneath
it.
The visitors’ innings was started by their skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Trego-c2181. The pair did not panic against the swinging new ball and attacked the opposition’s bowlers.
They collected 67 runs for the first wicket, giving a splendid start to the team. Trego was unable to make most of the start he got to his innings and was dismissed after scoring 37 runs off 27 balls.
Nick Compton was the next man to be dismissed in the innings after managing just 5 runs. He was followed by the team’s captain, who added 36 runs to the total from 33 deliveries.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jos-Buttler-c1733, who remained unbeaten until the end on 63 runs from 39 balls. His blistering knock
included five fours and three towering sixes.
Gloucestershire’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Herbert-Frederick-Fuller-c65789 picked up 2 wickets in the match, but the opposition got away with a very good total of 210 in the end.
This put the hosts under immense pressure, as the conditions were still not in favour of the batsmen and the ball was doing a lot of tricks.
Gloucestershire’s openers Alex Gidman and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hamish-Marshall-c1525 got out after scoring 0 and 4 in their respective outings.
The innings was provided some stability by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Will-Gidman-c2793, as the pair put together 35 runs for the third wicket. However, the former got out after scoring 23 runs. He was followed by three more quick wickets and the team was in a spot of
bother at 70/6.
Rain stopped play at that stage of the innings and Somerset’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harold-William-Stephenson-c61707 Kirby’s three-wicket haul guided the team to a comprehensive 59-run victory in the end.
