Rain had delayed the start of the game and the spectators had to wait for some time before some action finally began. The ground staff did a fabulous job, making the field ready for play.
However, the game was shortened to 25 overs per side, as plenty of time had been lost due to the conditions.
Considering the overcast conditions and heavy outfield, the Nottinghamshire skipper Chris Read opted to field first after winning the toss. He expected the ball to swing in the first half of the match, causing a few problems for the batting side.
The Somerset batsmen did not have many problems once they came out to bat, as the team scored 156 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 19.2 overs. However, rain stopped play once again, ending the home team’s innings at that point.
Middle-order player Nick Compton and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jos-Buttler-c1733 top scored the innings with 34 runs each.
Somerset’s innings was started by skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/C-Kieswetter-c1206. Both batsmen have the ability to bat aggressively and started attacking the opposition from the start of the innings.
After a 32-run stand for the opening wicket in just 4 overs, Kieswetter was sent back to the pavilion. The flamboyant player collected 23 runs off 16 balls with the help of three fours and one six.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Trego-c2181 was unable to make an impression, getting out for juts a couple of runs. He was followed by Trescothick, who failed to make most of the start he got to his innings. The dashing opener ended up with 30 runs from 19 deliveries, smashing six boundaries
in his outing.
Youngster Craig Meschede was unfortunate not to make a big impact, as he was run-out after adding 19 runs to the total off 15 balls.
10 runs later, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Hildreth-c1647 was also sent back to the pavilion after managing just 3 runs in his short stay at the crease. The hosts were struggling at that stage of the innings with 5 wickets down for 94 runs on the board.
However, Buttler and Compton collected 62 runs for the sixth wicket partnership, rescuing their side from trouble. The former got out after scoring 34 runs off 25 balls with the help of four fours and one six.
Compton remained unbeaten on 34, as the Somerset innings came to an end at 156/6 in 19.2 overs due to heavy rain.
