Somerset’s chief Brian Rose was impressed with the batting performance of South Africa’s Roelof http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 der Merwe in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a match of the Champions League Twenty20 on Sunday, September 25, 2011.
The Proteas all-rounder had set the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on fire with his explosive batting. He clobbered 73 runs off 40 balls with the help of nine fours and a couple of massive sixes.
This batting pleased Rose, who also played for Somerset in the past alongside some of the best cricketers in history of cricket like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Isaac-Vivian-Alexander-Richards-c64548. According to him it was one of the top ten best performances ever given by a player of the English club.
Rose stated, “That knock tonight would get into my top ten of all the one-day innings I have seen by Somerset players – and that takes something when you consider the players I played with and all those who have played for the club since. His innings was
an absolute piece of individual brilliance.”
The former Somerset player further added, “Roelof is a great player in terms of his all-round ability in this form of the game. He has got three chances of doing something brilliant in a game, because of the way he bats, fields and bowls.”
The flamboyant player might have impressed his team and the fans, but the spectators at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium were absolutely stunned after their local team’s loss at the hands of Somerset for the second time in the tournament.
Batting first, KKR had scored a very good total of 161 runs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JH-Kallis-c1692 top scored the innings with an unbeaten 74 runs off 61 balls, striking four fours and the same number of massive sixes.
However, the show was stolen by the blistering performance of van der Merwe. His team was not considered as favourite to win the match considering the slow nature of the pitch, but everyone was stunned at the end of the match.
Somerset’s confidence will be sky high at the moment, as a couple of their key players http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jos-Buttler-c1733 will join the team for the remaining part of the Champions League.
