Something I was thinking about last night.

My daughter is getting married this Halloween. She's using carved pumpkins for decorations and centerpieces. When should we carve the pumpkins? She suggested that we have a carving party after the rehearsal the night before. Would that be rude?

  1. Doing them the night of rehearsal dinner would be great and they would be fresh.

I do not think it would be rude as long as you let everyone know you will be doing this.  Although many of us think it is a cool and fun idea to do that evening, some may not feel the same.  Be open and understanding to those that would rather not help.  Some people to not like cleaning and carving pumpkins and should not have to.  I think it would be rude if you expect them to help and get upset if they choose not to for whatever reason.  If you need additional volunteers, just solicit additional people to help and let them come to the rehearsal dinner as a way to say thank you.

  2. Why would it be rude? It sounds like fun and a great idea.

  3. I think that's a great idea! I think it that it would be alot of fun!

most weddings that I have been too, have had a decorating party after the rehersal anyways!

    Good luck!

  4. It should definitely be done before the wedding, and having people help you carve them would definitely be a big help.  Also, once you carve the pumpkin, it has to be chilled so it does not start to wilt.

Another thought is to buy the rubber ones they sell around Halloween that look like they have been carved, and give them away as centerpieces.  This way people can use them yearly as a reminder.

If your daughter is sold on the real ones, use them at the Wedding Party table only.

  5. Not really. If you do it before that, the pumpkins won't be as fresh. This way, the pumpkins will be more fresh for the wedding, not partly rotted.

  6. Not at all, as a matter of fact, most people would enjoy helping and having fun helping. Make a contest of it, to help lighten up the experience. You would be suprised, that people enjoy doing stuff like that. And you can have fun doing it.

    Good Luck

  7. Sounds fun and lets everyone be involved!

  8. This is a great idea, and would give everyone a great feeling about being involved with your daughter's weeding. You could even have a contest to see who's pumpkin will be at the main table for the reception

  9. I would do something like a monogram or maybe related to the theme...ie if she's having a "love bird" theme then carve birds.  It would also be pretty cute to do the table numbers!  I'd stay away from the jack-o-lantern face.  It might be too cheesy.

The trick is to print off the desgin the size you want it on a sheet of paper.  tape it to the pumpkin then use a straight pin to make dots outlining the edges.  When you are cutting use the design as a guide and connect the dots.  If it's kinda complicated test it first by cutting it out of the paper to make sure all the holes connect to an outside edge properly.

As far as the carving party...make sure everybody is up to it and that the party doesn't last too long.  I wouldn't do more than one pumpkin per guest.  You don't want everybody exhausted after a rehersal then carving all night!  Prep the pumpkins by digging out the guts and marking the designs that morning.

  10. Anyone and everyone that's envolved in the wedding i'm sure are aware by now what your daughter will have as center pieces, and they've agreed to assist with the wedding , that will be assisting then. Using the pumpkins they can be craved the afternoon a day before the rehearsal or even two days and stored in a cool place so they stay fresh looking. The night of rehearsal though seems a bit last minute-ish. People want to rest and so on knowing the wedding will kind of drain them ,not to mention the reception. So maybe she should run this idea place those she was going to ask for help from with this, get their in put and ideas.

  11. It sounds like a fun, creative, and exciting way to do it for all involved!

  12. Actually, I think that's a great idea! Something fun for the whole family! Besides, if you do the pumpkins any earlier, they could begin to ruin before the wedding day. What a lovely idea!
