Something eating holes in Garden Membrane under stones?

Question

We are a section of Garden where it is membraned underneath and then a layer of stones/chips on top. We noticed that something had moved the stones about, and then noticed that something appears to have eating a hole right thru the membrane in a few places, then a small hole in the soil. Cant see anything obvious to explain it. Help needed please!!!???!!!!
