Question:

Something hanging out my kitten's bumhole?

My flatmate has really long thick hair (maybe 1,5 metres) and today I noticed my 3 month old kitten having half of one hanging out of his bumhole. He must have swalled it when eating.

I don't want to pull on it, as I said the hair is thick and strong and I don't want to cut him internally. Do I just wait for it to pass out naturally (i.e. for him to p**p it out)? I could cut it short so that he doesn't acidentally step on it and pull it out himself, causing an injury.

He looks healthy and normal, no signs of ill health.

  1. I have a cat that has swallowed string, and another x-mas tree tinsel

pulling it out could harm them internally you could just clip the excess off and wait for it to pass, just be sure its hair and not a tapeworm

  2. It may be hair, or a worm -- especially if it is white.  Inspect the stools in the litter box for white fragments; if you find such, consult a vet.  Tapeworms must be treated by a veterinarian, and the cat has to be of a particular age before it can be done.

  3. just leave him to sort it out himself unless you think it is causing him pain. tell your mate not to leave hairs all over the place

  4. I'm sorry, but I can't see for laughing. It reminded me of an event which happened to my cat several years ago. We used to have a Sunday roast and this particular week, we had a nice pork joint with string around it. We had our lunch and were dismayed to find that the meat we had left cooling has disappeared. The next night, our cat (whisky) came in with a piece of string hanging out of her bum. My OH pulled it and it must have come to the knot in the string. The cat yowled & shot out of the cat flap so fast that it broke and she wasn't seen anymore until the next night. The string had gone. So she had obviously passed it.

On a serious note and in answer to your question, just snip it off, but you should make sure your flatmate brushes or combs his or her hair away from the cat's food dishes in future. It may end up with a hairball which can be serious if it gets really big in the cat's stomach.

  5. My dog sometimes gets the same!!! LOL, when she does a poo sometimes a bit will hang on the end of a thread, lol, and because its attached to a poo i have to pull it out, LOL. So its quite safe to tugg on it, it wont cut!

  6. wow that sounds really gross

  7. When I was younger our cat used to eat the tinsel icicles we would put on the Christmas tree. Often she would walk around with one half way out of her bum and my sister would pull it out. Other than being irritated by my sister being around her, she didn't seem to care. However, one time the cat ended up pooping on the carpet after-wards so I'd recommend just waiting until his next trip to the litter box. I'm sure it will pass on its own, but if you would like to help him along give it a gentle tug (just wash your hands after-wards). I doubt it would cut him, it would more then likely break first.

  8. try a bit of hair ball remover to maybe help get that sucker out. i would contact a vet though just to make sure that there is no other concerns.

  9.   Try to remove it  the cat will let you know if you are hearting him.

If he starts to cry see a vet asap

  10. Haha, awesome.

The cat will be fine. You can let him pass it himself, or if the hair sticking out of his rear is just annoying you that much, you can pull it out if you like. A single hair follicle isn't going to lacerate anything.

  11. Wow thats weird.

Anyway, i'm sure it wont do any harm to give the hair a little tug, if it doesnt slide out his bum then leave it.

I cant beleive I just wrote that.

  12. Cats and kitten do create hair balls of their own hair as they groom themselves, so to some extent are accustomed to dealing with hair in their digestive tract.

If on light pressure the exposed hair does not come out of the offending o*****e, your suggestion of cutting, it at a safe length, I feel, is quite sound.

I am quite sure you will find this situation resolves in the very near future, on an imminent bowel action, but I commend your observation skills . An interim solution would always be a mild feline friendly apperient ( Bowel activator)

    Watch and learn

    All the best

  13. one hair wont injure him it will come out itself.

  14. Heya yeah just leave him it will come out naturally when he passes stools.
