So I'm trying to shed a few pounds before school starts. It was pretty hot outside, so I figured I'd go for a run. I put on leggings, sneakers, a wife beater, and a sweatshirt on. I took my sister with me. After running for a while, I was taking a break and was walking when I suddenly felt really weird.

I suddenly had a pressure on the middle of my chest.. like where my sternum is. I felt really nauseous all of the sudden. Then I felt really dizzy and disoriented. My legs felt really heavy and my vision seemed.. tinted and grainy. I managed to mumble to my sister "I really don't feel good.." and I was stumbling with my steps. After I stopped moving, it passed in a few minutes. We decided to go home after that.

WHAT HAPPENED?

What should I do to avoid that happening again?

  1. thats heat exhaustion. be VERY careful when that happens because it can get very serious, and very bad, very quick. dont wear a sweater when it's hot outside, try running in the morning. and make sure you drink lots of WATER. good for you for trying to get into shape! keep it up, be safe.

  2. First off, go tell your doctor-sounds like a heart attack!

What probably  happened was you over exerted yourself , then stopped and your blood pressue dropped too fast. This causes lightheadedness, nausea and sweats or chills. The biggie is a lack of profusion to your brain and fainting.

The chest pain is what should scare you off to the Docs office and get checked out on an EKG, there may be something going on you dont know about.

  3. you probably worked your body too much.

you need to be careful with high tempatures.

people have died from excercising too much when it's hot out.

make sure you drink plenty of fluids too!

  4. you could have almost passed out.. but this just happens when you don't have enough water.

keep hydrated... drink a LOTTT of water

also.. you said it was pretty hot.. so i wouldn't have put on that much clothing.

and another thing.. don't overdo yourself. you will shed the pounds in time (:

oh and if you buy the magazine seventeen they always have a workout section and they are pretty simple (:

  5. you got dehydrated.  Next time, stop to drink, or drink a lot before.  But, drinking a lot before may give you cramps

  6. Well - if it's hot out, you don't need leggings or a sweatshirt.  Dress more appropriate for the weather - t-shirt and shorts.  You probably were overheated and dehydrated.

  7. First I will preface this by telling you to go see your Family doctor chest pain is not normal when running.  Being overweight this could be an indicator of something going on with your cardivascular system.  So go to the doctor have him do a full physical to ensure you are in good health so you can enjoy the activity of running.

Next, your symptons also sound like what is likely to be a mild case of heat stroke, caused by overheating.  This can be caused by not having proper hydration while running or walking.  Carry a 500ml Bottle of water with you and sip water every 10 minutes.  Also before you start drink 250ml of water, you do not need to guzzle a lot of water but water is what helps us sweat and sweating is the mechanism that allows us keep our bodies cool.

Also there is an old adage “Cotton is Rotten”, so make sure you wear comfortable clothes made of wicking material.  This will allow moisture to be moved away from your body helping you to keep yourself cool.  Slow Down in the hot weather, there is no need to go fast take nice comfortable pace and the measure of that is being able to hold a conversation while running.

Running is not about speed it’s about endurance and stamina.  Also you may want to consider an LTR (learn to run) program.  Running clubs and some online resources offer schedules and programs to help folks get started.

    Good luck
