Something in wrong with the cranks on my bike

i just bought a new bmx bike from danscomp, the verda method. it works fine and everything but my cranks or making a loud click and cracking sound. Any suggesting on what it might be?

  1. Cleck the tension on the chain.  Locate the center of the chain between the front ond rear sprockets.  When you lift up and push down on the chain it should move about 1/2 inch.  Adjust the wheel so you get that 1/2 inch deflection.  If that is ok grab the crank and see if it moves back and forth sideways.  If it does the bottom bracket is loose or bad and needs replaced or adjusted.  You can always take it back and have it repaired or replaced.


  2. Check to see if the chain is skipping

  3. Clicks, cracks and pops from the "bottom bracket" could be the cause.  If you've isolated the noise to the crank assembly that's a safe bet.  I recently experienced this after having my bottom bracket tightened and ended up needing a new crank.

    Dirt and whatnot can work it's way in - but since it's a new bike it may have been assembled improperly.  I would take her back to the bike shop and have them look at it.  There has to be some kind of waranty!
