Question:

Something is wrong with my male Guppies...?

I have 4 male guppies in my community tank, and 2 of them are new additions, bought only last week. Three of the guppies appear to be 'scratching' themselves on the gravel or the plants - they kind of rub their body very quickly along the side of any object...

The rest of the fish in the tank seem fine and are not doing this... what is wrong with my guppies??

I done a partial water change and clean last week, just before I added the new guppies.

  1. maybe ick? i know sometimes fish 'ich' when they have it. look for some more symtomes in them., its possible your new additions brought it in. it sometimes takes upwards to 2 months to develope from present to pest. so, just keep an eye on things. hopefuly its nothing, but be prepared for the worst!

  2. Could be stress, what water treatment do you use? Also, the should be 3-4 females to males.

  3. Are they all males that could be the reason! you need to have more females than males in the tank!

  4. Have they got white spot? (little white spots in their body!) caused by stress, could of been introduced by your new guppy

  5. Some rubbing is normal - fish can get an itch just like people.  Excessive itching is a sign of trouble.  It could be an early sign of fungus or parasites.  Your local fish stores, Petsmart, Petco have cures for this.  Whenever you purchase new fish, it's a good idea to quarantine them for 2 weeks prior to adding them to your tank.  The stress of moving/shipping can bring out disease and you don't want to risk making your other fish ill.  Buying a small Eclipse 3 system for this purpose is highly recommended.
