Question:

Something stuck in toilet trap, been snaked professionally - help!?

My son is potty training and I heard the toilet flushing several times and now it will not flush on it's on properly. (Just fills and has to be plunged for anything solid to go down). If it's just liquid, it flushes fine half of the time.

The plumber was out yesterday and stuck his tools through the toilet and took the whole toilet off and then snaked it again. Nothing. It flushed 3 times in a row for him and of course the first time we used it afterwards, it stopped up again. I'm assuming that one of the items flushed was a toddler toothbrush that is M.I.A. I have a feeling that a round spool of that white medical tape might be stuck in the trap as well. That would explain why the snake is going through but not producing anything.

What's the next step? I rent so this is "my fault" and I don't think my slum lord is feeling like it's his responsibility. Suggestions? Oh the sewer line was also snaked - nothing. Whatever the flushed item, it's still in the toilet.

  1. u could remove the tank from the bowl and remove the bowl from the floor....turn the bowl upside down and place it in the tub....flush water through the bottom of the toilet and see if it washes out........if not buy a new bowl

  2. |It is quite a long path to get through the trap on a toilet. I have had several pens in toilets in schools because they float they are buggers they always try to float to the top in the trap. in those cases I can bail out the water and the pen will fall toward the bowl end. in your case you will likely have to remove the toilet. shut the valve off flush and hold the lever, bail and sponge out the remaining water and see if anything develops.  then remove the toilet It is difficult to get a hangar through but bend the end of a wire coat hangar into a small loop just so that it isn't a sharp point.(you should be able to cover the loop with your finger tip) and push the loop through from the bottom side. leave the hook on the other end and pull it through guide it at the start and don't tuck the hook in let it drag after if it doesn't fit the opening. it should catch or at least dislodge anything that is stuck then rotate the toilet as though you were trying to roll a ball through from the bottom.

  3. You will have to replace the toilet, the items you mention will be hard to snake out, they are caught in the toilet trap.

This is not real hard, just make sure the you use a wax seal to keep it from leaking.

  4. Without knowing the method of snaking the "S" trap in the toilet, and you stating a toothbrush, certainly that could be lodged enough to catch everything else, and clog again, even jambing the obstruction.

While I find it hard to believe that it couldn't, especially given that the toilet was pulled, did the plumber try to snake it in the reverse?

Obviously a new toilet might be the answer, even one from overstock etc. but I might try the search again first.

  5. I think you have to try by using a plunger with bucket of water flush into the bowl together. If that does not solve then the next step is but no choice, to dismantle the bowl and extract that litter thing out manually. But chances are the bowl might break and $ lost. Calling yellow pages are business people that will talk to you in terms of $. Very expensive. Even on newspaper also when they come they will charge transportation fee and complete also got no garrrenttee.

  6. I'd call the plumber and have him come back out. He obviously missed the blockage in the toilet. He could have checked the trap from the back side when he had the toilet pulled. Otherwise, you could go to the hardware store and buy a small snake for toilets and snake through the trap yourself until you get the blockage. Sometimes small items can get stuck in the trap and catch toilet paper, etc and cause trouble until you can finally get them out. My kids once flushed a simple straw down the toilet.

  7. From what you have said there is only one solution. the toilet must be drained again and removed. You will be able to put your hand (in a rubber glove) into the toilet from the bottom and feel for any objects, as well as from the top. With the way the toilet is built, you should be able to have your fingers actually touch, if you are reaching in from both ends.

Just to make the job a little easier, clean the bowl, then pour bleach etc. into it let it sit for 5-10 minutes then drain and inspect. If there is something in the trap you will find it this way.

Before you start get another Bee's wax seal. every time you lift the toilet it should be replaced.

If this does not correct the problem it must be something further down the sewer line.

Question- Did you actually see the plumber snake down the sewer line?
