Is there something I can get at the automotive supply store to add to the oil to help stop the exhaust smoke for awhile?

  1. You didn't mention how old the car is or how many miles.  A high mileage machine is wearing out and is huffing and puffing.   Maybe you just have a PCV valve that is stuck.  A mechanic can find that out real quick.      Udderwise, if a high mileage machine over 100,000 miles you are getting close to engine rebuild time.

white smoke/mist...moisture or steam in exhaust pipe if for a short while, it is natural, if all the time, leaking head gasket.

blue smoke...burning oil PCV, valve seals or rings or engine wear

black smoke....blocked air cleaner or faulty choke as it is unburned gas

    rainbow colored...drugs

  2. First check the PCV valve.   If they're stuck they can cause engine smoking.   Go to Pep Boys or Autozone and they'll help you see where it's at and recommend a replacement.    Most are fairly easy to replace without any tools.

You can add engine oil thickeners like STP or other brands to slow down oil getting past the rings and causing smoking.    If it's from the exhaust area.    Check for engine oil leaks on the hot exhaust pipes causing smoking under the hood though.   Oil thickeners won't help with an oil leak.

    Good luck

  3. What color is the smoke??  If the smoke is white and continual you could have a problem with your headgasket and would need to get it replaced... if its just burning oil and black STP makes oil thickeners and there are some other companies but it still doesn't hurt to take it into the shop and have it looked at if you can afford it.. I know I can't atm so I would just use thickeners.
