Question:

Something to reduce odour from guinea pig urine?

I have a guinea pig in my bedroom. When she was smaller there was barely any smell and I could get away with cleaning the cage once a week or so. Now I am changing her almost daily. I was wondering if there is anything you can feed them to reduce the smells in their urine.

  1. Get carfresh bedding it has worked wonders for tons of people.

  2. You can scrub the cage, toys and food dishes with very hot water and vinegar. It is a natural disinfectant, deodorizer and it is 100% safe to use. I use this 1-2 times a week on my 4 cages and they don't stink.

  3. Make sure that you're cleaning everything in the cage with a dilute vinegar solution, then rinsing with water.  That should help cut down on some of the odour.

Bedding types matter a lot.  I use fleece with towels underneath it and get away with changing my cage every 5-6 days.  Cedar and pine are both extremely dangerous and can cause respiratory problems.  Carefresh is a good choice in disposable bedding and gives good odour control.

The other thing is cage size.  If you have a pet store cage chances are it's very small and will get extremely dirty quickly.  If you build a nice big C&C cage she'll have plenty of room to run and be happy, and you'll have less frequent cage changes.

  4. There's this stuff in a milk-carton shaped container that makes it smell not as bad. You can buy it at Wal-Mart/Target.

Also, try cleaning the corners every other day.

  5. Do you have her spayed? Sometimes when the are not spayed they produce stronger smelling urine, to kid of mark territory. Also, check on her rump, right about where a tail should be, I believe that is a scent gland. I think to get rid of the smelly urine you should wash that part off with a warm wet cloth and dry completely.

  6. I use oder reducing bedding...but i have a dwarf hamster so its not as big...but im pretty sure they have some for guinnea pigs :D

  7. personally where she wets or messes you are ment to clean out every day just not the whole cage just the bits like where its got wet patches etc this should help wiv the smell. I know this because i have one and read up on it as i was going along also read some info b4 getting her. i hope this helps.
