Question:

Something to teach bored terrier?

by  |  earlier

my brother bought a little fell terrier a couple of years ago and has since practically moved out and only comes home every now and then. but we still have his terrier, and he barks ALOT!!

I think this might be through bordem, because he just sits in his kennel all day, he also has 3 collies to keep him company but they are in different kennels.

so i thought i could teach him something but i don't know what!!

the collies are working dogs (but 1s retired and another isn't trained yet and i do agility with her)

Any suggestions will be helpful

  1. The terrier is a working dog to.

Do agility with the terrier to. No reason not to train him to.

Most terrier breeds are working breeds to either run foxes, badgers, rats out of their homes.

Alot of terrier were bred to be rat killers.

None the less, he is still a working dog.

He barks because he can't take the isolation. He knows he should be doing something but doesn't know what it is.

    Tug-o-war

    Agility

    Dock Diving

These are just some of the things you can do with him.

If he is in a kennel all day he probably has kennel craze.

  2. agility4lyf, I haven't had any problems with my fell terrier.

  3. Terriers tend to be very energetic and feisty. They need to have some form of exercise. Have you considered agility for him? Flyball may even be a good option if he's a quick runner and is ball-motivated.

"A tired dog is a happy dog" The more you exercise and tire him out, the less likely he'll bark nonstop. Get him involved in some activities. Find positive ways to release all that energy cooped up inside him. Taking him for a run, playing fetch in the yard, playing tag (my dog loves tag), etc. are  fun for you and your brother's dog.

  4. terriers are very smart dogs! you can teach him just about anything you would like for him to know! here are a few fun tricks if he already knows the normal sit,lay ones.....

the bang trick ... when u point ur finger like its a gun and say bang and he rolls over to play dead

clean up! where you teach him to put his toys away in his toybox...this also hels you so you dont have to do it :)

    high five

act shy ... teach him to lay and put his paws over his face ... very cute :)

hope some of these work for you :) have fun!

  5. I personally think the best thing for this furkid would be to find her a new home where she is inside with a family that loves her and will take responsibilty for her, and not keep her in a kennel all day.  Poor thing is probably starved to death for love and attention.  Your brother doesn't seem to be around enough to handle the responsibilty of having a companion pet and the best thing for the animal would be a new home with loving people to care for her.  This is just my opinion, but it doesn't seem fair to this furkid to be treated like a piece of furniture, especially when this is a LIVING creature with needs and feelings.

  6. Get a Kong and fill it with peanut butter and freeze it that will keep it entertained for awhile

  7. Fetch is good or tug-o-war

  8. Why does he have to "stay in a kennel all day"?  This is driving a terrier CRAZY!  They are not the "lay around and sleep" kind of dogs.

Get him out, walk him, let him sniff around the yard, interact with him.  They are very social, have LOTS of energy, and need LOTS of attention.

You are right, he is BORED and as long as he stays in a kennel he is going to express his displeasure, and rightly so.

You don't have to actually "teach" him something to solve this problem.  Just get him out and play with him, spend time with him, and let him expend some of those enormous energy reserves!  Or you can do agility training with him.  Mainly just get him out of the crate and enjoy him.

You might even have a little fun yourself!

  9. Find this little guy a good home with someone who will love and show him attention.  A kennel is nowhere to be kept all the time.

  10. He is a little cracker.  Terriers are great dogs and so intelligent.  Bet more intelligent than a lot of people who use this site.  Anyway i think you will probably be right, he may well be bored if he is not too active.  What would happen if he was in with the other dogs, or is he just a bit too aggressive for him to be in with the others? which terriers can be.  He needs to get out more, take him for long walks off the lead where he can run and run or even try him with the agility, he will probably love it.  Terriers are working dogs too so beware as they can be very brutal if they catch a rabbit, rat or other small animal.

I wish you the best of luck with him.
