Sometimes my guinea pig makes a snorting noise when she breaths?

The vet checked for infection, etc, but gave no solution - said maybe just allergies

What do you think this is? Have you seen this before?

Every once in a while she makes this sniffly noise with each breath.

Also, this guinea pig drinks way more than my other guinea pig!

thanks for any insight / solutions you can provide

  1. If you had it checked out by a vet and the vet says that it is fine, then is should be.

I haven't had experience with this type of noise personally, but I do know that guineas make alot of different noises.

Just keep an eye on her and if their are any changes take her back to the vet.

  2. dont worry its totally normal some guinea pigs do this because they are fat, and some just do it because thats the way they breath. And mabye it just that your pig has a bigger apetite for water. And plus, its summer and it needs more water than normal.

  3. dude. its just breathing

  4. Maybe she has a cold, or allergies, sometimes they make squeakynoises, but you may want to call a vet and ask them, good luck!

  5. Well, maybe it's like humans with something up there kind of blocking causing it to snort. I haven't seen this before. It's probably drinking more due to the fact that if it breaths so heavily and with its nose issue like that it would become easily dehydrated.

My teacher has a pug and they have their noses all scrunched and pressed up. Because of that, they need a lot of water. I guess that could be like your guinea pig!

  6. Drinking more can be a sign of diabetes however, your vet probably would have picked up on that. It could be allergies, do you use pine or cedar bedding? Those can cause allergies, and if so, you should switch to carefresh or another dust free bedding like Yesterday's News or corn cob.

  7. The snorting is actually fine unless it's constant then if it's like it is with hamsters, then it's way more serious and airway constriction. My hamster did that and he was fine. My vet said it was like hiccups but through their nose. It was weird how he explained it.

as for the guinea pig who drinks more than the other one... If that one guinea pig has ALWAYS taken in the same amount of water then he's fine. but if all of a sudden he's starting to drink more it's (like the other person said) diabetes. But the amount that one guinea pig drinks doesnt have any correlation to how much the other one should drink.
