Sometimes when putting on a fresh layer of paint, parts of the old layer start to peel off why is that?

  1. Try using a primer such as KILZ before painting. It will adhere to the old surface and prevent peeling.


  2. Your suppose to scrape the old paint off first before painting again.

  3. Because the old paint lost it's adhesion over time or had an improperly prepped surface prior to it's application. It was being held in place by the other 'Old' paint that surrounded it. The added the weight of the new pain along with new wet paint was just the combination the existing paint needed to flake/peel away.

    Basically the better the prep the better the results

  4. 1. You didn't do a proper 'prep' job and scrape off the loose paint.

    2. The solvent in the new paint managed to loosen the old paint without penetrating enough to get adhesion.

    This can happen when the paints are 'incompatible'.
