Question:

Somewhat bald patch and dandruff on rabbit?

My female dutch rabbit, Lucky recently developed a somewhat bald patch on her lower back. Before this happened, she had quite a bit of dandruff. Now where the bald patch is there is a lot of dry skin / dandruff. I heard it may be mites but what I looked up about it, didnt look like my rabbit at all. Unlike rabbits with mites, her ears, eyes, and facial area is clean. I also read it may be something to do with a urinary infection, but it showed no pictures or descriptions of what it would look like. Dont say take her to the vet because my father just quit his job so we have no money to spare at the moment. But he is getting another job so she'll have a vet appoitment sometime in augest. She seems to be in no pain or anything like that so it doesnt appear to be life-threatning. Also our vet was closed today so we are calling them up tomorrow to see if they have any advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And no critisism.

  1. It still might be fur mites.  So...if the vet visit is a ways off give ivermectin (injectable or horse/cattle wormer paste or gel) as treament.  Just a pea size dab of the gel or paste will do.  It's not a big deal.  But it at your local feed store.  It's not too expensive.  Keep it in your fridge after opening.

If it still has them when your rabbit sees the vet, a simple test can be done to determine whether or not the flakes are mitess.  If they are NOT, you can give your rabbit a teaspoon of black oil sunflower seeds each morning as a supplement.  It should add a bit of fat/oil to the diet and get rid of the dry flakes.

  2. EW, idk what to tell you.
