If the death happened in your area than most libraries hold newspapers that you can look at, as long as you know the date. Or check with the newspaper itself get on the internet and check their archive see if its there, if not contact the office...The library is usually a pretty safe bet though.

Libraries have old newspapers on microfiche or computers.

Historical Societies also have the same resources, plus much more.  Each state and each county normally has a Historical Society.  Many of these places have websites.  Go to Google and plug in your county and state, along with 'Historical Society' - and you ought to come up with something .
