  1. The reason you go to work is to earn money, for about 99 percent of people anyway, and 'the art grew out of it' basically means that he got bored of it. And the last 2 sentences mean simply that he doesn't want to dishearten or sadden anyone, but it's the truth, that's the way life goes, the chances are that you will or have grown bored with your job - it isn't his fault, it's just the truth.


  2. Hm. The reason that you went into the business got old, or at least that feeling of desire to go towards it disappeared.

    If people think that you'll be happy going to a business just for the money, they will be wrong [as you have just stated ("and the art grew out of it")]

  3. This is a quote from Charlie Chaplin and he means that his motivation for going into show business was to make money. Art grew out of his performances, but it was not his original goal. He goes on to say he is sorry people don't like that answer and would rather hear he did it for art's sake. He can't help, but tell the truth.
