my son is pretty sick with the flu, all the normal symptoms plus throwing up and stomach pains. he has been sleeping most of the day, but when he is awake, he is very uncomfortable. what can i give him to make him feel better? also, what foods/drinks would be good and that he could hold down?

also, how long does the flu typically last? this may seem like a stupid question, but he never gets sick so i dont really know what to do for him. im worried about him missing a lot of school work, but his girlfriend already said she would bring home all the work he missed for him.

so what can i do to make him feel better?

  1. I would give him tylenol to help reduce the fever. Chicken soup always help. And extra TLC.

  2. chicken soup is always classic.

and gatorade frost. that stuff goes down so nice when you're sick.

  3. Well, soup and OJ are actually pretty good for the flu. If he's feeling pain, you should ask a doctor about any medicine he might want to take. A simple pain reliever might work, but asking a doctor would be good too. Make sure he gets LOTS of rest, it'll make the flu go away much faster. As for his work, let him get it done at his own pace. As long as he gets it done ^^;  The flu can last for a few days or maybe a week or so, but if you take care of it with healthy solutions, it'll end quicker.

  4. if he is running a fever, have him wear the least possible clothing will help lower the fever.

DON'T give him milk if he has a fever ! !

    Drinking fluids will help.

If he has a fever of over 104 degrees for over two days without  it going down, consider taking him to the doctor.

My 2 year old niece that had pneumonia just got out of the hospital this week and we thought she just had the flu.She was running a fever of 103 degrees at the hospital.

  5. An old fashioned trick is cola syrup to coat the belly lining- you can buy it at most drug stores.

Also, with the vomitting, I would give only room temp liquids.  I am a nurse, and this is something we find is really helpful.

As far as diet, everything everyone suggested is good... usually clear liquids first maybe some crackers.  But, if the belly pain gets bad, I would actually seek some medical advice.  Sometimes, appendix and pancreas can look like flu/viral infections with the high fever, etc. plus the GI sx.

Motrin and Tylenol for pain/fever- Motrin every 6 hrs and Tylenol every 4... you can piggy back them.  Motrin and then 3-4 hrs later Tylenol 3-4 hours later Motrin and so on- this way the pain/fever are under control and you aren't always giving the same thing.

Hope he feels better! Flu can last upwards of a week, the stomach flu 1-4 days depending on the strain. If he was vaccinated with the flu shot (which missed 40% of the strains this year) he might get better faster.  The MD can always swab his nose for flu and then start an antiviral if it's positive (usually Tamiflu).

  6. omg im so sorry the flu sucks so bad.  i would give him either coca cola or 7 up.  i personally drink coke.  and to eat see if he can eat dry toast or lots of jello.  jello is best cause it turns into liquid, but dry toast is also good cause it fills the stomach more.  he should be lots better tomorrow mine only lasted a day and then i was just really sore and tired the next.

  7. Most important is just that he knows you are there for him and you love him.

    More specific:

The best thing is gatorades or even the children's drink pedialyte (they also make icepops) ... these drinks are made to rehydrate.

"Caring for a flu patient is something everyone is capable of doing. The basic goals are to keep the patient clean, dry, warm, and well hydrated. Patients need a soft place to lie down, be comforted, told that they are going to be OK, and reassured that you will be there for them. The most important medical treatment is to make sure they have plenty of fluids. Dehydration must be prevented because it can quickly lead to death or contribute to stroke or heart attack. Keeping the patient hydrated is the best treatment for the flu and the one that is most likely to save lives. The same treatment advice applies to other viral and bacterial illnesses that might be confused with influenza. So, don’t worry so much about whether or not you have made the correct diagnosis or not. The treatment will be about the same anyway."

"Treatment of chills and body aches and pains

Chills cause shivering and are often associated with body aches and later fever. Treat chills by keeping the patient warm; give them an extra blanket or a hot water bottle. Body aches respond to acetaminophen, and ibuprofen used separately or together. "
