Question:

Son may have been left insurance money, how to find out?

My son, who lives with me full time had his great grand parents die with in a years time. Since then my Ex-wife (who he has not seen him more than twice in the past five years, and barely scraping by on the other side of the country) has been asking for his SSN, claiming that its "beneficiary information needed for her insurance", (her father, my dirt bag ex father-in-law is also trying to get the same information from his adult son).

My Wife and Ex-mother in law think that my Ex might be trying to collect money left for my minor son from his great grandparents using his SSN. How would I go about finding out if there was money left for him? And to secure those funds for him only?

thanks for any help!

  1. Do not release the information under any circumstances.  Do not sign any papers at all.

    SEE AN ATTORNEY IMMEDIATELY.

There is obviously something going on here that probably needs to be investigated and perhaps taken to court.  A qualified lawyer who specializes in handling estates is probably your best resource.

The problem is if they get their hands on the info, any money your son may be due would be gone and the damage would be irreversible and permanent.

  2. call the social security office and find out.

  3. Get a lawyer to straighten things up.

  4. Contact an attorney.No kidding!!

  5. possibly try through a probate court... I'm not really sure though.

the reason I wanted to post is to say you really need to be careful w/his ssn, she might want it to use to open credit (basically destroy his credit before he can get credit cards) just be real careful. and she could potentially get it anyway.... look into lifelock, I know it may seem extreme, but for about $10 a month, you can protect even minor childrens credit.
