my son has been taking off his medication for his adhd this happens about every 2 yrs just to see if he has outgrown the need to be on it anymore and even though he is high school a teenager is it unreasonable to ask the teachers to cut a bit of slack with his punishment due to bad behaviour during in this time i really feel that its not his fault for acting up and being totally silly and impulsive and i dont think he should have to suffer with punishment for not being able to control himself some of the teachers are a little understanding but a few seem ignornant would any other mums feel this way i dont wont to make things worse with his teachers but i'll be damned if im goning to let him take the blame.

  1. Most people give med breaks that coincide with breaks from school so they won't interfere with the child's education. You can't force a teacher to give him a break but you can choose a time for the next med break during summer vacation. You would only be doing it a little sooner than usual the one time and then after that it will be 2 years between breaks.

If you want to talk to other moms who are living with ADHD and get support and advice and share your experience you can come to http://adhdldsupport.proboards107.com/in... and join us there.

If you live in the US they can't put him in another classroom. Least Restrictive Environment means that he would have to not be able to learn in the regular classroom even with a lot of other help before they could even consider putting him somewhere else. He obviously can do fine in his regular classroom with his meds so there is no way they would consider it.

Stimulant  medications go through your system quickly so there is no build up. They are out of their systems the same day they take them.  If he were taking a non stim then he might need to be weaned off. I'm sure your dr would tell you if that is the case.

  2. The medication has some bad effects, my brother was on it and he started to get really bad nosebleeds and headaches from it.  Sometimes it is best for you to get the headset that your child lidtend to the teacher through and they cant hear anyone else so they dont get distracted as easily.  It really helped my cousin!  The schools here can also provide the children with there own teachers aid so that they can help  them stay on task. I understand that the teachers freak out a little easily, but if I was in a class full of teenagers, with the large class sizes of today, I would be freaking out too!  It is just way to many people to help!

  3. There won't be any ADHD if you just spank him properly when he does something crazy.

  4. i totally understand where you are coming from.

first of all, you should never take anyone off medicine flat out, then put them back on it.

try lowering the dose  but taking him off for two weeks.

for schooling, have you ever thought about putting him in a a special ed class for those two weeks?

i know that you want him to be in a "normal" class, but unfortunately that is not always possible.

talk to the principal. let them know the situation you are in, maybe you can have him in a special ed class for those two weeks, where there are qualified teachers who can "deal" with ADHD. he could do his normal work in that class, just with more supervision, or change the two weeks of no meds to the summer, or winter break, that way he is not in class, and won't disturb anyone (although i KNOW he can not help it)

    good luck
