My son had his 12 month shots on Thursday, about 4 days ago. Yesterday I had him at the beach. He was crawling around in the sand and splashing in the water. Well last night after we got home he didnt seem to feel very good. And this morning he was vomiting, conjested, runny nose. He cant keep anything down. It may just be a flu bug. But could it either be from his shot or from swimming at the beach. Im waiting for the pediatrician to call, which usually takes him a bit. Does it sound like just a bug, or should I be worried because of the shot or because I had him at the beach. He has no fever. But it is very pale, his eye are red with really drak circles, vomiting, runny nose, conjested.

Any suggestions?? I feel bad, he is so hungry but cant keep anything down. Should I wait a few hours then just try pediolite, to see if he can keep that down. I need some advice please, thank you.

  1. were you swimming at an ocean beach?  You can get sick from swallowing too much sea water.  For now I would just make sure he doesn't get dehydrated and wait to see what the pediatrician says.

In the future, I wouldn't let a baby that young in the water so far that the waves knock him over.  You have to be very careful at the beach.

  2. Sounds like a tummy bug to me Hun. i would just see what your GP says and in the first posters answer I'm sorry about your brother but you shouldn't be saying things like that to a mum that already worried sick, its very rare that a child has a reaction to the MMR although after 4 days i would say its more a bug than to do with the mmr

  3. there is probably no way of finding out if it was the beach water or the mmr.  your dr will most probably say that it definitely was NOT the mmr because most drs dont want to believe the shots they are giving children are dangerous even though they are for some.  if the mmr is contains "live virus" (i cant remember if it does) then your son's body could just be reacting as though he has measles, mumps, or rubella since he was injected with the disease.

  4. I've never had my baby at the beach, but she has had her MMR and it did not negatively affect her at all. When I had my MMR when I was younger I had no negative reaction to it either.  I am not aware of possible side effects of the MMR vaccine, so I am not much help in that respect, but I just know that me, my brother, my daughter and my nephew have had MMR in the past and never had any type of reaction to it.

It could be very easy to pick up something at the beach. Animals come by and potty in the sand and the water (especially when it's been warm out and the water has been warm) can harbor many many types of bacteria that can cause dysentary (sp?) and other illnesses like that and the symptoms are often diarrhea and vomiting.  You should probably take your son to the doctor right away.
