Sonar Mapping?

I was wondering how Sonar Mapping Works. Any answers would be helpful.

  1. Sound waves in a focused cone are pulsed toward the sea floor,  which they bounce off of.  The times at which the echoes return to the source tell how far the waves traveled before they bounced back, allowing software to create a 3-d image of the seafloor sampled with the sonar.
