so i'm trying out for a play so when school is out i have something to do (it's also in the midst of tech week for secret garden!). the musical is beuaty and the beast (i was just in it as a napkin and a candle seller). it's open for 8-20 year olds so there's gonna be some competion, so i was wondering what i should pick out for a song, i'm a mezzo-soprano and for my last audition i had done, i did green finch and linnet bird from sweeney todd (which went great because i got to be 1 of the 5 girls called back for the main role). any ideas?

  1. hi

  2. Ugh... tech week AND preparing for an audition. That's gotta be rough.

    Try some of these...

I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady

Moonfall from The Mystery of Edwin Drood

    Jimmy from Thoroughly Modern Millie

Another Suitcase in Another Hall from Evita

How Lovely to be a Woman from Bye Bye Birdie

Spark of Creation from Children of Eden (pretty good personality match for Belle)

I hope one of these works for you. If you think the vocals are a good match but don't necessarily like the song, try looking for other songs by the same person in that show, or in other shows. Good luck at the audition and at your performances of Secret Garden!

  3. you should sing "i wonder" from sleeping beauty...im pretty much the same way as you and i sang that for a play audition and i recieved the lead role out of all of the actresses

  4. a spoonful of sugar-Mary Poppins

    in my own little corner-Cinderella

    Colors of the wind-pocahontas

    hope this helps

  5. bring whatever song you feel is your best, yes you score points with casting people for having a song similar to the show, but something a little different could help you stand out and if you do it well enough then odds are they'll have you called back just to try you out with other songs...

    break a leg!

  6. The musical Mame has a lot of good songs for mezzos.  Stay away from Sondheim unless you take voice lessons and can master the tricky changes and rapid pace.

The role of Belle is a mezzo so I would recommend the opening song from Beauty & the Beast "Belle" if that is what you are auditioning for.  It is always beast to use a song from the show or a song in the same range so that the casting directors can "imagine" you in the role.

    Break a leg!

  7. Try singing "I Want It Now" from Willy Wonka. Veruca Salt is pretty much a mezzo-soprano. It's a fun and easy song to sing too.
