Sonia Cheah confident to continue her impressive run in the SEA Games – Badminton news
Malaysia’s talented shuttler in Women’s Singles category, Sonia Cheah, who has recently delivered superb performance in the last week’s World Junior Championships, is quite confident to continue her impressive run in the upcoming SEA Games, which will kick
off in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday, November 12.
Sonia has been playing terrific badminton for the last six months and has proved her worth by delivering wonderful performances for Malaysia. She also played a vital role in the final battle of mixed team event in the Junior World Championships and won her
fight. Malaysia won the gold medal in the mixed team event.
The 17-year-old Sonia is the next hope of Malaysia after the retirement of the former top seed, Wong Mew Choo. She has proved that she is ready to take bigger challenges in all international events.
She lived up to the expectations in the team event in the junior world meet but failed to produce the same form in the individual event as she lost her Women’s Singles match against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara at the quarter-final stage.
The young shuttler is disappointed for her loss at the top-8 stage but she is satisfied with what she did in the team event final and helped her team to win the title for Malaysia.
Sonia said, “I performed quite well in the mixed team event. I dropped a match in the tie against Hong Kong but made up by winning a point against South Korea in the final. I can look back on my junior career and be proud of being in the winning team.”
She further added, “I am determined to be a good team player in my first senior tournament - the SEA Games next week. I am only competing in the team event but I may be called on to deliver if the tie is level at 2-2. I feel more confident after the world
junior meet.”
The young shuttler is confident to put up strong show in the SEA Games by playing to her maximum potential and win glory. It will be her first participation in this event and she is optimistic to make it memorable for herself and also for her country.
