Question:

Sonlight & Eclectic vs. Alpha Omega Lifepacs?

I have a $600 budget for my materials, and I need to get curriculum for 10th and 11th grades, which I plan to complete this year.

I think Alpha Omega would be a cheaper route, and would be nice, but I am looking at Sonlight too. I think, that even if I buy Sonlight used, I might not have enough money to buy the other subjects.

I can get the Complete Alpha Omega Lifepacs for $180.40, or two years for $360.80. This includes all the subjects I need.

For Sonlight, I can just purchase the Instructor's guides, and borrow the rest from the library, for around $180 for two years.

But, then I would have to try to get all my other subjects from elsewhere ??

What do you suggest??

  1. Have you considered a free online school. It may prehaps cut your costs. Many times ALpha Omega will also offer discounts if you order certain times of the year.

  2. This site should help:

    http://www.homeschool.com/

  3. I think the phrase "You get what you pay for" would apply here.  You should not base your curriculum on cost alone.  Of the two you mentioned, Sonlight is definitely my preference.  It is a completely different style of homeschooling than Alpha Omega.  If the student enjoys filling in blanks and lots of seatwork, then go with Alpha Omega.  If the student enjoys reading and being read to, being challenged to think, and being exposed to new ideas, then go with Sonlight.

  4. i'm partial to ABeka,  but,   check with the public schools,

in CA, they provided texts for 6-8th graders

  5. I know a lot of people like Alpha&Omega.  But, personally I found them to be flawed and of lower quality.  They come in such a nice format though.

Sonlight gives options to use some pretty high quality materials.

  6. Well, my personal preference would be for Sonlight due to the approach. You've got to figure out which one better meets how YOU would like to go about homeschooling. Alpha Omega is work texts; Sonlight is literature with supplemental work to be done.
