Sonnen’s manager does not want to be a part of the spat with Jones – UFC News
Following UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and his manager Malki Kawa’s Twitter spat with Chael Sonnen, Mike Roberts, Sonnen’s manager, claims managers should let the fighters settle the score instead of pitching in.
Roberts’ comments came in after Jones’ manager responded to Sonnen with harsh words.
“I'm not going to respond to what Malki says,” said Roberts in an interview with MMAjunkie.com.
“All anybody cares about is the fighter. What Malki and I have to say means nothing,” he added.
“I would never say anything bad about Jon Jones. That's between Jon and Chael, and it would be very irresponsible of me to pass any type of judgment on Jon Jones in regards to this matter.”
“It's like Chael has said all along, 'If you're not trying to win championships, you need to retire.’”
Roberts believe managers should be more inclined towards setting up fights instead of being part of the verbal disputes between fighters.
The entire dispute started when Sonnen challenged Jones on UFC Tonight. Sonnen called Jones a ‘punk’ and someone he can easily beat.
Sonnen’s words were taken seriously by the light heavyweight champion and he immediately shot back via Twitter. Jones called Sonnen someone who disrespected Anderson Silva but fell like a kid to him in the cage.
According to Jones, Sonnen is someone who loves talking but cannot deliver. He even assured fans that he is not falling for Sonnen’s trap. Jones knows well how Sonnen can get under skin by throwing such words at him and so he is ready to take it on.
Sonnen will be making his comeback to the light heavyweight against Forrest Griffin this fall. President of UFC Dana White has already promised a title shot to Sonnen if the ‘American Gangster’ is able to defeat Forrest.
For now, Sonnen, who could not defeat Silva at middleweight, wants to go head to head with an even more dangerous opponent Jon Jones. Sonnen might not have an idea of how tough Jones is but most analysts believe he is way better Silva. For someone who could
not defeat Silva, it is quite impossible to win against Jones.
