Sonny Bill Williams excited about starting role in Rugby World Cup opener - Rugby News
All Blacks’ Sonny Bill Williams , who was recently was called a bench player by former South African coach Jake White during Rugby World Cup 2011, is thrilled to have a starting role against Tonga on September 9. All Blacks coach, Graham Henry, revealed
his 22-member squad yesterday, September 7, and allocated the number 12 position to Williams instead of Ma’a Nonu. Sonny Bill Williams was pleased with retaining his position in the team and said he was waiting for this opportunity.
Sonny Bill Williams was axed from the All Blacks side during the Tri-Nations decider against the Wallabies on August 27 as he failed to impress the selectors with his previous outings in the tournament. Ma’a Nonu was given the starting role during the entire
tournament at the inside centre spot. However, Henry made a number of changes in his teams’ line ups to accommodate Williams at the position.
Nonu has been moved to No 13 with the return of Williams and Henry said that he was hopeful that the new combination will work for them. Apart from Sonny Bill Williams, the All Blacks selectors made eight changes in their side to get their Rugby World Cup
campaign underway.
Talking to reporters about the new role for Sonny, Henry said that the popular player had a good time during Super Rugby and he is hoping the same from the versatile player. Henry added that, “I thought he played very well in South Africa but I do think
when the players do get a chance, and haven't played for a while they try and push it too much, probably overdo it and I guess patience is going to be key.”
Meanwhile, Sonny Bill Williams is excited to grab the opportunity as he said that, “I want to take it in two arms and really give it a good crack. That's what I am aiming to do and am really excited to be playing. We want to start off with a good bang and
I am thankful I am part of it.”
The All Blacks new combination will be tested on September 9 when they take on Tonga in the event opening clash in Auckland.
