Sonny Bill Williams for Boxing prior to World Cup
The All Black star, Sonny Bill Williams will be making one more appearance in the ring before he takes on the World Cup challenge.
Williams is to make a comeback to his boxing ring in June. This will be his fourth fight at professional level and the All Black has yet to announce the name of the opponent.
Williams has won all the previous three fights and knocked out his opponents in very short time. He is looking for a real challenge his time and is craving for a good competition. Williams was found saying that he wants someone with skills and someone who
can actually punch his lights out.
The match will coincide with the Crusaders clash on June 6, while the Crusaders will be seeing off their second Super rugby campaign. On the other hand, Williams is still in the seeking stage for an opponent.
The 25-year-old New Zealand’s hero said, “I'm not a world beater at this stage. I will certainly be in the ring with someone who could knock me out.”
He is peaking in his boxing form at the moment and has boosted his confidence after beating Scott Lewis, the Australian boxing star, in January. He won the match with the unanimous points in the shortest amount of time.
The special aspect about the upcoming boxing clash is that Williams will be donating 100,000 New Zealand dollars from his earnings of this match to Christchurch earthquake victims. The earthquake took at least 166 lives and almost demolished half of the
Christchurch, one of the biggest cities of New Zealand.
The boxing match will be cancelling Williams’ presence from the “Clash for Canterbury.” Williams seems to be happy about the match and very positive about his skills. Moreover, he is glad about helping the earthquake victims through his talent.
He said, “I'm blessed to be able to make a good earning as a sportsman. I want to help the hardships people have gone through. This donation is a no-brainer for me.”
Sonny Bill Williams has raised the standards for a sportsman in New Zealand and it is probably not for the first time that we have seen a rugby player who is a boxer, but being a champion and highly skilled in both is certainly an exception.
Meanwhile, there is also debate going on the All Black squad for World Cup that is yet to be announced and with this recent boxing development of Sonny Bill Williams, the All Black coach is having concerns for his fitness and availability. Although Todd
Blackadder, the All Black coach is fully supporting Williams, the major fear is regarding the injuries. If he somehow picks a strain or any minor injury during this boxing venture, his inclusion in the All Black squad will be difficult.
Williams said, “I feel it's a bit of the unknown mixing the two sports. It's never been done. There is an element of fear and risk but I want to test the boundaries.”
