Sonny Bill Williams is set to make debut for All Blacks
Rugby Union convert Sonny Bill Williams is set to make his debut for New Zealand against England in the Autumn Internationals this Saturday, 6 November at Twickenham.
The former rugby league star moved into the game of rugby union a few years ago. He moved back to his native country from club side Toulon earlier this year to be considered for the national team.
Since then, Williams has impressed for Canterbury in the Super 14 and he is now set to start the opening Test match in New Zealand’s tour of Britain and Ireland.
The centre was delighted with his inclusion in the first team and said, "I’m still buzzing."
The All Black becomes the first player to play as a New Zealand international in league and union since Marc Ellis, who played for the All Blacks from 1992-1995 after converting from league.
"A couple of years ago it just seemed so far away. It's an unreal feeling to be not only in the team this week but starting. It's going to be massive," said Williams.
The New Zealand coach Graham Henry is eager to see how Williams performs in his first match for the All Blacks and said, "We wanted to see how he could handle Test match rugby. Playing at Twickenham is a huge atmosphere, 83,000 capacity—it doesn't get much
bigger than that."
The match will see Williams come head to head with former rugby league team-mate Shontayne Hape, who also converted from rugby league to play in the centre for England.
Speaking to BBC 5 Live, Williams said, "I will definitely have a yarn with him after the game, but hopefully he is not happy when we are on the field, and we are the ones on top."
New Zealand will go into the matches as the favourite, having beaten England 6-19 during their last encounter in the November 2009 Test.
England have not beaten New Zealand since 2002, when they won 31-28 at Twickenham.
