Sonny Bill Williams likely to make decision regarding his future with All Blacks - Rugby News
Sonny Bill Williams is reportedly ready to make a quick decision regarding his future with the All Blacks in the next few days. Williams has not given a fair share of starting roles in the recently concluded Rugby World Cup 2011 which may force him to make
an overseas deal or possible return to rugby league.
SBW tweeted on October 27 that his grandmother has been discharged from the hospital and he will soon announce the future line of action regarding his career.
Williams missed the celebrations march with side after a historical win of Webb Ellis Trophy after 24 years, as his grandmother was in critical situation in a local hospital. The versatile player, who remained most searched player on Google during RWC, was
featured in All Blacks starting combinations only on couple of occassions against meagre sides in the presence of Ma’a Nonu.
Williams had delayed his decision of signing new contract with any of the domestic and overseas clubs before the start of RWC 2011 and was expected to break the silence after the conclusion of the world showpiece.
He started off his career in rugby league in 2002 for Bulldogs and later on played for many other clubs in that format. However, he decided to make a big shuffle in his career as he joined rugby union in 2008. Due to his tremendous performance in Super Rugby
15, he was included in All Blacks RWC squad but has not live up to his capabilities.
Commenting on the current situation regarding the future of SWB, All Blacks assistant coach, Steve Hansen, said that, “He'll be the best player in the world in a number of positions if he wants to be. His value to the All Blacks and New Zealand rugby is
immense, so hopefully he stays and that would be great if he does.”
The coach further said that, “It's not about leaning on him. He's got to do what's right for him and his career. We'll just let him go through the process. He's got a very good manager in Khoder and he'll work it out. All I can say is we'd love him to stay,
he's a great player.”
The chief executive of New Zealand Rugby Union, Steve Tew, is hopeful to retain his services for All Blacks.
