Sonny Williams silences critics with win against Scott Lewis
After a series of consistent criticism and uproars from rugby critics regarding Sonny Williams’ boxing career, he burst out like a volcano last night against Scott Lewis in the boxing ring winning unanimously.
The All Blacks star kept his pride integral and did not let his fans and New Zealand Rugby Union down for their leniency. He gave Scott Lewis a tougher than expected competition and was all over the ring firing punches with ease.
His decision of blending the training of Rugby and Boxing has been questioned a lot and many analysts found it as a bad move from his side. The unemployed Sydney fork lift driver had better things on mind, when he unleashed the determination in him once
again, that was once seen on rugby field in his early years.
Williams was very disappointed in his previous two fights when the renowned opponents were knocked out by the All Black star in the first rounds. But this time Scott Lewis after being thrashed in first round gave even a tougher competition to Williams, who
was taken by surprise.
The 36 year old Lewis gave an aggressive start and moved around the ring belligerently. He looked more aggressive in round two, where he spotted all the vacant areas and started picking on the mobile Williams. But the All Black hero’s thrusters were too
good for the experienced Lewis. Williams took some quick body shots to score more points and found the target before the round ended.
Williams blooded the underdog in third round, but Lewis kept on the fighting and punched the superstar on the side of his head after the bell. Williams kept his cool and came back in fourth round with more force and kept on taking body shots, while Lewis
didn’t seem like giving up at all.
Williams was lacking the decisive blows, but at last gave a good thrashing to Lewis in the sixth round and practically closed Scott’s right eye. The judges awarded the points all in favour of Williams.
He won with a respectable score of 60-55, 60-55 and 60-54.
Williams now has a strong standing in both worlds of rugby and boxing and has an answer to all those who pointed fingers at the growing legend.
He will be returning home to report to Crusaders and start with the cure of his stress leg injury from Monday. His primary goals are to be a part of Tri Nations and ultimately World Cup squad, which already look quite achievable, but his fight within himself
to prioritize his commitments might disturb him when his Boxing will clash with the coming rugby matches.
