Question:

Sons foot swollen and blistering?

Last month, my sons foot swelled, blistered and pus coming out around the ankle and we thought it was his new shoes so we returned them. Yesterday he has the same thing happening, but he hasn't been in new shoes.

Last month, my boy got bitten by a black fly his eye swelled shut for three days and we were told that's a normal reaction for some, especially toddlers so not sure if this is a bug bite again or not bc I don't see anything on his foot that looks like a bite.

Does anyone know what this is about?

I'm currently trying to call my doc to get him in but as usual is on holidays and doesn't leave anyone in his place, nor does going up to ER help bc I did that when it came to his eye and I was shooed out the door for 'real emergencies'.

  1. The fly bite reaction does not sound normal too me, it sounds allergic.  I would get an appointment with a pediatric allergist.  This will take several months.  In the meantime keep calling his pediatrician, pus sounds like an infection.  I would think that your pediatrician would prescribe an antibiotic.  Also, I would push your pediatrician to give you a script for your son to have labwork done.  Specifically I would want labs to look at wbc's (the white blood cell count-a high level would indicate an infection), a CBC to look at a complete blood count, and the immunoglobulins especially the allergy one IgE.  If this is elevated, it indicates allergies.  Since this happened a month ago, it is more likely a chronic issue, and unlikely that the same bug bit him again causing the same result.  You need to start ruling things out and getting some answers.  It will also tell you how allergic a person is.  My son's is severe, we have an epipen and have had one since he was 12 months.  He never had a reaction.  I took him to see a pediatric allergist because of his eczema which is allergy based.

  2. There is an illness not serious and will go away that will cause this. It is called hand foot mouth disease - the info page is below plus some pics- it does start usually with a fever

  3. It's illegal to 'shoo' you out of an ER if you truly feel it is an emergency. My mother (who is here with me now) works in a hospital and things like this come through the ER doors daily and she says they should be taken seriously.

It could be a # of things including a festering infection! Get ahold of your docs answering service and when he calls I bet he will tell you to take him to the ER.

    Good luck!

p.s. Tell the triage nurse you will have her fired if she 'shoos' you away.

  4. Im not sure if this would help but Listerine heals blisters.

  5. poor you and your son, what kind of a doctor is he, same here need to be dying before do a house visit either.  I would go to emergency and demand to be seen, be nice but firm, he could have a poisoning and it may need antibiotics as he has had allergic reaction.  Don't settle for no.  Better to get it checked out now than something develop and cause complications, you are so not over reacting, just been a good mother, wish you and your son well.

  6. take him to urgent care.

are you in an area where there are fire ants? it could be an allgeric reaction

  7. he should see a specialist immediately, sounds like an infection, i would not hesitate at all Angie

  8. TAKE HIM TO THE ER IF YOU CANT GET IN THE DOCS!!! It could be a bug bite and it could be infected. My friend whos older left a spider bite alone for a week and ended up in the er it swelled to a huge size and was to pain full and could not walk (it was swollen and pussing the whole time) The ER said if he did not get in when he did they would have amputated it. He developed a staff infection of some kind from scratching at the bite cuase it itched. They cant tell you to leave for real emergencies. It sounds like he got bite or scratched and there is an infection. Im sure you have caught it alot sooner and is not a dangerous but it can get serious over nite. GL and i hope its not to bad.

  9. First, I would recommend changing pediatricians  That's not on. They can't leave their patients unattended.

Take him to see a doctor today. Then call the pediatrician and tell him you need his medical records transferred to the new doctor free of charge, because he left you in a position where you had no place to turn
