Question:

Sony A200 or Nikon D40? HELP!

Hey everyone!

I am planning on getting a new DSLR this Thursday! And I wanted some opinions…

I have narrowed my choice down to 2 cameras that are in my budget range:

First is the Sony Alpha A200 with 18-70mm lens. ($499.00)

Next is the Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens. ($421.00)

Which IYO is the better camera and why? Also do you guys know where I could find either of these cameras at a better price than what I listed?? Are there any good online coupon codes I could use for these cameras??

Please let me know! I am very undecided between these two cameras at this point.

Thanks!

  1. the nikon has a larger image sensor and a better kit lens. go with the nikon.

  2. I would go with the Nikon D40. Nikon will have the most available lenses and other accesories. If you become serious in photography Nikon and Canon are the only companies making professional level equipment at the moment. Every lens you buy now will be compatable with all other Nikon DSLR models. No matter where you go with your photography Nikon will have the equipment you need.

Where are you buying this camera from? $421 is really cheap. Make sure that it comes with a genuine Nikkor lens. You don't want a cheap third party lens. The lenses are the most important part of your camera so don't skimp on them.

Before you buy though I suggest that you go to a good camera store and play around with them. The one that feels best in your hands and has the controls where it makes sense to you is the camera you should get.

Sony makes a decent camera but they are new to the DSLR market. They don't have all of the equipment that Nikon and Canon do. If that is o.k. with you then the Sony will be fine as well.

  3. hello...

IMHO.. i prefer Sony Alpha A200 for a beginner. I've tested a few DSLR before I decided to go for Alpha A200. These are some advantage for A200 that I can list down

    Sony Alpha A200

    - 10 mega pixels. (D40 : 6 Mega pixels)

    - built-in image stabilizer.( D40 : VR lense is expensive)

    - come with Dust reduction. (D40 : Nill)

    - wider back LCD panel 2.7". (D40 : 2.5")

    - battery can last for 750 shot per single charge.

    - various lineup of lenses from old Konica-Minolta.

    and some other more...

  4. If you can increase your budget by approximately $100 you can get the Sony A300 which features Live View that works with the auto focus.

Also, keep in mind that Sony has its version of Image Stabilization in every camera body so every lens you use will have that benefit. Neither Nikon or Canon offer this benefit so if you want IS you have to pay extra for it with the lens.

Don't worry overly much about accessories for the Sony DSLR cameras. Almost every accessory for the older Konica-Minolta D5 & D7 DSLR cameras will work. Also, you can use very legacy Minolta Maxxum AF lens made since 1985.

    Buy the Sony.

  5. hi, with out any doubt u go for nikon D 40.

    Nikon is always better choice.

  6. Sony A200

  7. NIKON makes better cameras in general.
