Sony CEO comments on PS Vita – Video Games Update
Sony CEO Andrew House addressed the complaints against the Playstation Vita about not having enough titles for its steep price.
The Playstation Vita (PS Vita) was announced last year at Sony’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (e3) press conference and launched this year in February. The PS Vita, despite being a significant leap in technology from the original Playstation Portable (PSP),
did not stir up the market.
Its’ competition, the Nintendo 3DS, on the other hand has been dominating the handheld market even though it had a pretty weak launch.
Recently many developers have been ditching PS Vita support in favour of the 3DS and that spells trouble for Sony as the PS Vita currently not only lacks a decent user base but also a solid library. This just further adds to Sony’s problems as the lack of
games is causing the PS Vitas’ sales to lag. Last month the Vita was outsold by the Playstation 2 (PS2) in Japan.
The rise of smart-phones is also a huge contributing factor for PS Vita’s diminishing sales as now lots of gamers don’t feel the need to spend an extra $300 on getting a handheld. They already own a smart-phone which is capable of playing the same type of
games, with the same graphics, cheaper prices to download and a vast library.
Sony has been making a lot of blunders recently as Vita did not get enough coverage at Sony’s e3 event this year. Sony admitted after the conference that they should’ve talked more about the PS Vita at their conference.
Sony CEO Andrew House said, "We know that killer games are going to be what sells this device."
Claims that Sony has a decent amount of PS Vita projects in the pipeline and they will be revealed “when the time is right.”
Many gamers are of the view that the Vita is not worth its’ price tag right now. This is eerily similar to what happened with the Playstation 3 when it launched with a $600 tag but started selling like hotcakes when it got a substantial price cut. Maybe
that’s what Sony needs to do with the PS Vita as well.
Sony better announce some new games for the PS Vita pretty soon if it wants to change the sales trends for its’ handhelds and doesn’t want a repeat of what happened with the Playstation Portable in the last handheld generation.
